Try to awake your sense of direction ...

Orienteering means "getting through", that is moving on the ground with the help of topographic maps and compass. Orienteering is a sport that in recent years has had a rapid evolution in Trentino, as a hobby as well as a competitive activity.

On the Paganella plateau have been arranged 3 "permanent itineraries" of different lengths (long, medium and short) in which, through the placement of fixed control points, at any time it’s possible to train or try for the first time the thrill of orienteering. The three paths of different distances and difficulties surround the lake and reach Cavedago. The beginning and the end of the paths are located in front of the Andalo Conference Center.

Special topographic color maps (short path, average path, long path) are available for people that want to try this activity in the nature. Those maps show accurately all the features of the ground, from the network of paths to the degree of woods’ accessibility, the presence of ponds, of mineral springs, of trenches, old ruins, etc. On the ground are placed control points ("lantern" in jargon). And their position is indicated on the map with red circles.

The essence of orienteering is to "find" these control points in the chosen paths using the topographic map and the compass. With orienteering is it possible to get inside the explorers’ part, learning to discover the more hidden corners, facing every kind of experience, from the easiest to the most difficult.

Orienteering is also a play that consists in complete as quickly as possible a path marked on the map and in cover it individually on the ground. It can be performed by foot, with skis, mountain bike and even by horse. It’s possible to do it as competitive or just as amateur sport, alone or in company, with the unique purpose of being outdoors in the nature. Furthermore orienteering joins families who participate in events in several categories, each with their own personal aim.

Topographic maps are also available at the Tourist Office of Dolomiti Paganella (Dolomiti Square 1, Andalo).
