WALKING WITH LLAMAS AND ALPACAS
A journey of discovery into ourselves
This hike is accompanied by llamas and alpacas so that you can stroke their soft and highly valued wool as you inhale the fragrances of the forest. The sounds of nature induce a state of profound physical and psychic relaxation. Llamas and alpacas walk at a slow and steady pace. These docile, tranquil creatures look after the people near them in times of difficulty, forming a relationship of reciprocal trust.
You can learn a lot of information about them during the hike for a better understanding of these little known animals and to dispel some urban legends. Our walks are never very physically demanding, but by accompanying one of our animals you exercise a lot of different muscles and help relax tensions that you might not even be aware of.
My name is Maurizio Cattafesta. The Athabaska centre is a dream achieved thanks to my love of animals and it continues to grow, based on experience accumulated working for almost 20 years with sled dogs, and 15 years with camels, cows, pigs, horses, and other small farm animals. Today Athabaska is a sled dog school, a farm, and a Bed & Breakfast based in San Lorenzo in Banale, as well as being home for more than 100 animals. A youthful and innovative project that strives to revitalize an abandoned rural area of our region by offering eco-friendly tourism that also creates jobs and improves the local economy. Life and work at Athabaska means “getting back to our roots”, based as far as possible on self-production of food, rediscovery of traditional crafts (processing llama and alpaca wool, woodwork), and close interactions with our animals.
