If you love Val d’Ambiez then you are sure to love the Agostini Mountain Hut
“A TASTY DISH”: Home-made sberlette pasta with Ciuìga del Banale, a traditional turnip salami from San Lorenzo Dorsino, which recently became a Slow Food presidium.
“OUR RECOMMENDATION”: Spend a night in the hut: seeing the spectacular sunset and early morning light, warmed by a crackling open fire, is truly revitalizing.
“PERFECT FOR …”: Ideal not only for mountaineers who want to climb the via ferratas above the hut but also for families passing a day in the high mountains.
As you ascend up the narrow Val d’Ambiez, beyond the last sleepy Alpine meadows, you enter the realm of Dolomite rock as you slowly approach the towering cliffs overlooking the Rifugio Silvio Agostini, an old mountain hut at an altitude of 2410 m. The famous climbers who traced out the history of the Brenta Dolomites passed countless nights here, recounting their dramatic tales, tracing out plans, and dreaming of their next great ascents. This small welcoming mountain refuge has been recently restored but it maintains the same thrilling atmosphere of years gone by, and is still a valuable starting point for those setting off on the famous local rock climbs.
The hut can be reached from the village of San Lorenzo Dorsino. Follow the road signs for “Val d’Ambiez” and park where the road ends at Baesa. Continue on foot for about 4 h 30 min along path n. 325 or follow a gravel road. As an alternative, ideal for families with children, you can reach the Cacciatore hut using a convenient jeep taxi service and then proceed on foot for about 1 h 30 min.
The Agostini hut is simple and comfortable, offering traditional Trentino cooking. The wood panelled interior and majolica stove ensure that it is always warm and welcoming. The custodians, Roberto, Emanuele, and their grandfather Ignazio are ready to introduce you to the local savours and treat you with their own biological herbal tea or an old fashioned dwarf pine grappa.
The hut is open in summer, roughly from June to September. We recommend contacting them directly to check the exact opening dates.
