Where Romanesque and Gothic art meet

Molveno is the ideal location for relaxation and sport but it is also well-known for its culture and traditions. As can be seen from the Church of St Vigilio located in the cemetery which dates back to the 13th century and was dedicated to the Bishop Vigilio who died in 400 A.D.
The façade is embellished with frescoes by the Baschenis brothers while the Romanesque main entrance includes a frescoed lunette depicting the "Redeemer, the Virgin Mary and St John. Inside two different periods co-exist, the Romanesque style of the 13th century (which can be identified by the church's grey structure) and the subsequent expansion in Gothic style, from the 16th century, during which a "fragment of the Crucifixion" came to light while peeling off the plaster.
The sacristy was added in 1875 and in the 1990s (from 1991 to 1995) the masonry work and frescoes underwent restoration. You can find detailed information about the conservation programme at the Tourist Office (Ufficio dell'Azienda per il Turismo) in Molveno.
The inside of the church is open to the public during the summer season from mid-June to mid-September and by appointment only in winter.

The Church of St Vigilio in Molveno is listed among the cultural properties to be protected by the Autonomous Province of Trento.
