ANDALO – MALGA SPORA
The beating heart of the Brenta Dolomites
This route winds through pine forests and green fields to reach the plain where Malga Spora is located. It is one of the few Alpine mountain summer dairies which cannot be reached by cars.
It is the least strenuous route to the Alpine summer mountain dairy. It starts from Andalo and continues along trail 301 with a vertical drop of 800 m and takes between 3 and 4 hours. Let's have a look at it in detail!
From the APT (Azienda Promozione Turistica - Tourist Information Office) in Andalo in Piazza Dolomiti take the S.S. (Strada Statale - main road) n. 421 towards Mezzolombardo, at the Via Crosare junction turn into Via Priori and follow it until just a few metres before the playground where, on the left, trail 301 to Malga Spora starts.
Near Maso Pegorar cross the asphalt road and follow a pretty steep mule track leading to a bend in the forest that rises from Cavedago.
After a few hundred metres on the right there is trail 301 which crosses highly exposed and scenic ledges, including 100 m to be done with a metal cord, arriving at the Fontana Fredda spring.
Continue uphill through a forest of larch trees hundreds of years old, until you reach the top of the hill with low lying pastures, continue walking to reach Malga Spora (1,852 m).
See how butter and cheese are made using traditional methods in the alpine pastures surrounding the Malga on alternate days in summer. If you're lucky you'll see a shy groundhog passing through.
The Malga is open from June to September, take advantage of the chance to stop here to and stay, in fact there are 2 dormitories with 22 beds.
To return to Andalo follow the same trail back.
